Marine Science Center-Turtle Rehabilitation

Just south of Daytona Beach, the Marine Science Center is a great place to visit in Ponce Inlet.  They do wonderful things for the many injured sea turtles and seabirds harmed by fishermen, boats and other environmental hazards.  Although your not allowed where the injured turtles are being cared for, there are great observation areas.  The turtles and seabirds are mended and then released back into the environment.  It’s a wonderful learning experience for kids and adults alike.

Awesome Aquariums and Natural Habitat Exhibits

In addition to educating the public about the rehabilitation of sea creatures, there lots to see including marine environment exhibits with turtles and coral.  Life size replicas of alligators and manatees as well as a giant sea turtle.  Lots of aquariums with marine life, and my favorite, a stingray touch pool!  After feeding time, you can pet these very friendly creatures with a two finger touch.  They seem to like it because they kept coming back for more petting!  They’re a little slimy, but soft to the touch and it was great fun.  So don’t be afraid, stick your fingers in and enjoy!  Make sure to visit the Seabird Rehabilitation Sanctuary across the parking lot to see lots of local birds who will also be released after their recovery.

Discovery and Research

The Marine Science Center also does research on the local marine environment.  There is a classroom lab in the center for visitors with video, microscopes, and other interactive learning programs  great for kids.  You can call in advance for a guided tour, or if you have a large group.  General admission is $4 for seniors $5 for adults and $2 for kids ages 3-12.  Located in Ponce Inlet, right past the lighthouse, follow the signs for free parking and have a great time!

 See you at the Beach!
